JURY SENTENCES MICHAEL DIXON TO 45 YEARS IN PRISON

Michael Charles Dixon
(Washington Co. Jail)

Michael Dixon has been sentenced to 45 years in prison for the murder of a Blinn College student.

On Tuesday, a jury found Dixon guilty of the first degree murder of Trey Kurtz on October 30, 2014.  Wednesday, the same jury assessed his punishment to 45 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice-Institutional Division.  Dixon will not be eligible for parole until at least half of the time is served.

Washington County District Attorney Julie Renken gave her comments on the verdict:

“We are pleased with the jury’s verdict and would like to thank the jury for the time and attention given to this matter. The death of Trey Kurtz came from a senseless, tragic set of decisions made by Michael Dixon and his co-defendants.

"This verdict will not bring Trey’s parents their son back, but I pray it gives them some peace knowing that justice was sought for Trey and we will continue to do so.

"I want to also thank my staff on all the hard work put into this case as well as many with the Brenham Police Department. Our two agencies will continue to work together to make Washington County a safer place.

"I hope this verdict sends a message to the next group of young men in Brenham that think about doing senseless acts like this.”

At this time, Renken cannot comment on any of the evidence or the details of the case, as the co-defendants’ cases are still pending.

The case was prosecuted by Renken and Assistant District Attorney Lauren Haevischer.  Dixon was represented by Dallas attorney Scottie Allen.

  1. Texas does not execute juveniles, if I am not mistaken Michael was 17 at the time of the murder therefore he did not qualify for the death penalty or life without parole. If the jury had handed down a life sentence for capital murder he would have been released in 40 years. I think the punishment for first degree murder is 25-99 years..

  2. Not saying what they did was right but you all are forgetting the fact that they are not adults they are children who made a dumb mistake they was 15/16 when the crime was committed life would be to harsh of a sentence

    1. Excuses, that’s the problem we don’t hold our children accoutable; explains the reasons for the behaviors. If they are grown enough to make “adult” decisions then the “adult” consequences should follow.

  3. Let’s not forget the Blinn College student was dealing drugs he chose that life and if it was one of our children these comments would be different.

      1. But he’s not just an innocent victim, play stupid games, win stupid prizes……no one deserves to be killed but he put himself in that situation on his own

  4. The idea that this sentence makes Washington Co. safer is a pipe dream. Life w/o parole or death would have been a better option. This sentence is a sick joke. I guess the victim’s life wasn’t worth much to the DA &/or the jury.

    1. The DA asked the jury to assess life. She did not give the 45 years, the jury did. She fought incredibly hard to get justice for Trey Kiurtz.

  5. The death penalty will make people not want to commit crimes like this before a 45 year sentence. Eye for an eye a life for a life is more appropriate!!

  6. What a joke is right! I’d like to know how many tax payers dollars this while court case will cost the tax payers and why don’t they and the 45 years of food, snacks, tv, phone whatever else is free to their bill???
This makes no sense and someone should be reasonable for not setting a stiffer sentence because this is a slap in the face to the victims families!!! Just a JOKE!!!
If you hurt, kill, murder someone the penalty should be the same for you!!!

  7. 45 years, and possibly 22.5???? So this convicted murderer could possibly be in his early 40s and back out on the streets of Brenham! Ridiculous!!!
