LABOR AND DELIVERY STILL CLOSED AT BAYLOR SCOTT AND WHITE

Expectant mothers who were hoping to have their babies delivered at Brenham’s Baylor Scott and White Medical Center will have to wait a little longer.

Although the Labor and Delivery Department at Baylor Scott & White in Brenham was supposed to reopen tomorrow (Friday), December 21st, officials with the hospital say it will remain closed.  In a prepared statement this (Thursday) afternoon, officials said “At this time, we are still unable to offer scheduled deliveries due to a recent, unforeseen staffing situation.”

The only certified OB/GYN at the local hospital, Dr. Aaron Campbell, has been on leave for the past two weeks, but was due to return tomorrow (Friday).

Expectant mothers who come to Baylor Scott and White in Brenham are being diverted to their College Station hospital.  The statement says that the local emergency department staff in Brenham has board-certified ED physicians who are trained to care for expectant mothers and their families in emergency situations.

Hospital officials go on to say, “While we are still asking expectant mothers to make arrangements at other hospitals, we are continuing our vigorous recruitment for permanent OB/GYN coverage.  Simultaneously, we are also actively exploring all avenues to secure temporary coverage for these critical positions – looking both inside and outside Baylor Scott & White – so that we can preserve the level of Labor and Delivery care our patients should expect.”

In November, hospital officials attempted to permanently close Brenham’s Labor and Delivery Department, but were outvoted by the local Baylor Scott & White Board members.
