LAKE SOMERVILLE FULL FOR FIRST TIME IN YEARS

For the first time in over two years Lake Somerville is full.  Reservoir Supervisor Emmitt Attaway says the heavy rains Monday and Tuesday, has pushed the water levels at the Lake past its full capacity of 238 feet above sea level.

Lake Somerville nearly dried up during the drought of 2011.

Attaway says the Lake was at 238.74.  Lake Somerville is considered full at 238 feet.  He says this means they may have to release some water because he expects another round of rain, and more water still could be coming in from the watershed.  Attaway expects the lake levels to be at 239 in the next day or so.

This water level is a far cry from the situation three years ago.  A devastating drought had taken Lake Somerville’s levels down so far that boat ramps had to be closed and it was dangerous to engage in swimming.

Attaway says all the boat ramps are open and expects a successful summer season.

Area cities such as Brenham can also breathe a sign of relief.  The plentiful water in the Lake means no water restrictions for city residents.

  1. Actually, last spring (March or April) it was at 240′ for a brief time before they opened the gates. And in 2012 it was above the “full” level of 238′.
