LAWMAKERS STEP UP EFFORTS TO CURB IMMIGRATION CRISIS

Plans to beef up patrols along the Texas-Mexican border at a potential cost of $1.3 million a week are getting more attention from Texas lawmakers.

The Texas Department of Public Safety are testifying today (Tuesday) about border operations before the Texas House Committee on Homeland Security and Public Safety.  The hearing comes two weeks after Gov. Rick Perry took the rare step of authorizing additional spending for an operations surge along the border.

Members of the committee have called the flood of unaccompanied children crossing the border a ‘humanitarian’ crisis.

More than52,000 unaccompanied children have been apprehended while entering the United States from Central American countries.

Congressman Michael McCaul released a statement Monday saying he supports President Obama’s recent efforts to increased border security, including the request of $2 billion in emergency spending along the border.  He said the Administration sent a strong message of deterrence by mandatory detention and removal of those who come into the county illegally.  He did say however, that this crisis was long in coming and action should have been taken sooner.
