Roger Chambers, owner of Market Realty in Brenham says after strong consideration and lengthy discussions with numerous citizens and elected officials, he feels “others who share his conservative values could better serve the district at this time.”

Chambers issued a statement late Thursday afternoon in which he says he wanted to make an announcement immediately so as not to confuse the citizens of the district.

Chambers said Wednesday he was considering a run for the position, but had not committed to becoming a candidate.

He also says he encourages others to run in addition to several others who have already announced their intentions to seek the position being vacated by Lois Kolkhorst when she takes over as District-18 State Senator.

A special election has not yet been called for by Governor Rick Perry.

Four other people have already indicated they intend to run for the post: Burleson County attorney Leighton Schubert, Schulenburg businesswoman Becky Berger and Austin County Judge Carolyn Bilski, as well as Democrat Cecil Webster.

The legislature convenes in its 84th session, January 13.
