LOCAL CELEBRATIONS ABOUND

Today Friday we celebrate our nation’s independence—and that means a slew of activities and celebrations throughout the area.

Celebrations are taking place in Brenham, Chappell Hill, Somerville, Burton, Round Top and Independence as we celebrate the Fourth of July.

Events kick off in Chappell Hill with the 38th annual ‘Biggest Small Town Parade.  Joel Romo of the Chappell Hill Chamber of Commerce says they have many attractions, old and new, including the World Famous Chappell Hill Marching Kazoo Band.

Romo says this year’s theme for the parade is ‘I love the 4TH of July in Chappell Hill.  They will have music from Haley Cole, a choo-choo train and other children’s activities.  The parade gets underway at 10:00 am and can be heard live on KWHI.

Meanwhile, the longest continuous Fourth of July celebration west of the Mississippi River continues in Round Top.

They are planning the 164th Fourth of July Celebration with a parade at 10:30, beginning with the firing of the Civil War cannon, followed by shopping and food. The Round Top Rifle Association is planning a brisket, pork, and sausage barbecue.  Then there are games for the children and many more attractions, including continuous musical entertainment.

Retired Marine Corps Gen. Joe Webber, who has moved to Round Top, will give the Independence Day address to kick things off.

Burton’s American Legion will hold a barbecue at the American Legion Hall.  The beef and pork will be sold from11am to 1:30, and there are all sorts of games and entertainment throughout the afternoon.

Independence will be celebrating our national independence, today (Friday). The 7th annual Independence Celebration begins this afternoon, with a trailride and parade.  Mark Rosenbaum of Independence says they will have music and plenty of food, as well.

They’ll be celebrating the Fourth in Giddings with their annual Fury on the Fouth, featuring a night of CBR bullriding.  They will also have music and a huge fireworks display at 10pm.

Lake Somerville has a variety of attractions. The park opens  at 11am and continues until their fireworks display.

In College Station, the Fourth of July celebration is at the George Bush Presidential Library. The ‘I Love America’ celebration features a full day of activities culminating with fireworks and a concert by the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra.

And, Washington On the Brazos State Park is hosting their annual Fireworks on the Fourth Celebration.

Ginger Moreland of the Park says they will have the attractions  everyone has come to expect, including period games, frozen treats from Blue Bell Creameries, and of course the spectacular fireworks display.

Moreland says to get there early for the Cody Bryan Band performing at the amphitheater at 7pm.  Josh Ward  had to cancel his performance after he was injured in a boating accident.

Moreland says people need to move out towards the Barrington Living History Museum to view the spectacular fireworks display, sponsored by HEB, just as soon as it is dark enough.
