LOCAL LEADERS REACT TO GOV. ABBOTT’S NEW ORDER

Brenham Mayor Milton Tate

Leaders around Washington County have differing opinions on Governor Greg Abbott’s decision to end statewide COVID-19 restrictions and lift mask requirements.

Brenham Mayor Milton Tate said while he personally feels this decision comes too soon, he ultimately does not want to require residents to wear masks.  He does, however, urge them to continue to be cautious and mindful of others.

Tate expects the Brenham City Council will take up this topic at its meeting next week.

Meanwhile, Burton Mayor David Zajicek believes Abbott did the right thing, and that the state needs to return to a sense of normalcy.

Through Abbott's order, businesses are allowed to continue limiting capacity or using safety measures at their own discretion.  County judges in hospital regions that exceed a COVID-19 hospitalization rate of 15 percent for seven consecutive day can implement restrictions, but they cannot impose jail time or other penalties for failure to wear a mask or follow orders.  They also cannot reduce capacity below 50 percent.

KWHI has attempted to contact Washington County Judge John Durrenberger for his opinion on the matter.

  1. And, I’m assuming that all the people on this thread who are in favor of what Abbott has done will respect the businesses who still require you to mask up to go in. Abbott gave businesses the option to require masking just like he gave people the option to continue masking. We are not going to start hearing of customer temper tantrums when a business requires masks, taking their frustrations out on some minimum wage employee like we have in the past. Right?

    1. Sadly, the Adult Temper Tantrums will be at an all-time high beginning Wednesday when asked to put on a mask to enter an establishment. There will be another covid-19 surge.

  2. Nice your right to not wear a mask is far more important than my right to breathe. I feel like we are almost at the top of the hill almost over the top. We were stuck inside a couple of weeks ago people. I hate to say this is why the numbers went down. But 1 & 1 is 2. We need much more then 6% fully vaccinated. I think our premature whatever u want to call it,. Is going to knock us back farther later. How many times have we reopened and shut back down. Not to mention the new strains either.

  3. I think the Gov’s decision is long over due. Everyone should be able to make their own decision to wear or not to wear a mask. What Ive noticed, is that those of us who don’t want to wear a mask or not critical of those who do, and those who want to ware a mask are critical of those who do not.

  4. The proof will be in the results. I really feel that we are so close and this was too soon Would rather see about 8 more weeks of restrictions.

  5. There are people who have to interact with the public as part of their job. Wearing a mask protects others as well as yourself. I was raised to do what I can to help those around me, and to be thoughtful of others and not just think about myself. If a slight inconvenience to me, which is all a little piece of fabric over my face is, helps those around me, I’ll happily do it. As a conservative, I hope for the day when we remember how important that is. It makes me sad to see the mindset of “me first at the expense of others” that has unfortunately taken hold of our society. I hold no anger to those who disagree, we’re all in this together.

  6. 1. My mask protects YOU from me. You wear the mask to protect other people from your germs.
    2. As of March 2nd Texas has fully vaccinated 6.8% of the total population. For those who are not good at math that means 93.2% of the population has not been fully vaccinated and therefore are vulnerable.
    3. Getting the vaccine REDUCES the chance of you getting and spreading the virus it DOES NOT eliminate it. People who get vaccinated can still spread it; the vaccinated person just won’t get sick.
    4. Texas has ALL the mutated strains of Covid. The more it mutates the more potential there is of the current vaccines not working on those mutation. Why do you think the flu vaccine is constantly being updated? *Don’t believe me…Goggle how do viruses mutate and what it means for vaccines*

I’m not saying we shouldn’t open 100%…. but what I am saying is we are still going 75mph down the highway so its not really a good time to remove the seat belt and the doors.

Also, all the above can be easily be Googled so don’t take my word for it…look it up for yourself.

    1. How about you wear YOURS to protect you, and the rest of the world can get on with their lives unafraid

    2. Since you love math, you should include in your calculations the number of people who have recovered from COVID and therefore have the antibodies. It’s almost 10% of the population that has recovered. And if you believe in asymptomatic spread, then a much larger percentage of the state already has the antibodies but never had a reason to go in for a test. Over 15% of Texas now has 1 dose which is 92% effective after 2 weeks. It’s much less than 93.2% that are succeptible to COVID. The virus is running out of fuel to spread at previous rates the most vulnerable are now being protected.

You can choose to continue to live in fear but don’t ask to rest of us, who are good with both math AND statistics, to do the same.

  7. AGAINST Medical experts advice..The number 1 reason 500,000 Americans are no longer with us and the main reason the virus will keep on changing getting stronger and stonger every day!!

  8. I’m grateful for the choice, now whoever wants to wear there’s, can. And whoever doesn’t want to, doesn’t have to..it’s a win win.

  9. Never should have had a mandate!
Babies die from sleeping on tummy’s, due to carbon monoxide. They breath in the air they breath out. Same thing with a mask! So many get headaches from mask and wonder why!
It also declines your immune system. I’ve seen more people wearing masks get covid, than people who do not wear them. I wonder why!!
Thank you Gov Abbott for finally doing this!!!

    1. I gave worn a mask since look last April and gave not gotten the virus and know hundreds of people that do the same. We have not gotten the virus. I don’t agree with you. The science doesn’t prove what you are stating.

  10. I think it’s too soon!!! We should be united to work together to fight this pandemic. The pandemic is still here and not going anywhere till we work together and not fight politically. We could have waited till at least 50% of our country become vaccinated. Now we will be maskless and hopefully the deaths will not rise because we are to impatient. Praying we come together

  11. Abbott’s decision gonna come back and bite him n his butt just watch wat i tell ya Texas gonna b the death Capital State

  12. The Lone Star State should have stood firm, like South Dakota, and made it the choice of the people from the start. If you choose to wear a mask, fine, but don’t tell me that I need to wear one, which I don’t. Yes, I know it is a real sickness, have friends that have died from it, but they also had other health issues that were a compounded cause of death. I’m glad Abbott finally did decided to do what I think most Texans wanted.

  13. I agree we should open everything back up, to full capacity but masks should still be worn.
I’m pretty sure most places will still request masks be worn while in their shops.

  14. Please do not let this article and other articles bury the previous article this week when our local city government purposely told the taxpayers half truths and purposely under reported the whole truth.

  15. Totally agree with Gov Abbott. Wear a mask if you want. We are all free to make our decision as to what to do. I’ve worn a mask for a year inside and outside my home and still contracted the virus. Do what you want for your own body as illegal aliens pour over the border not wearing masks and infected with covid. None of this makes sense. There are a lot of sheep out there following lots of misinformation & fake news.

  16. Do not agree with Abbot at all. He will see that this was too early. This is just ridiculous. The reason it was under control is because of safety precautions. Do away with those and the stupidity comes back out in people and it will spread like wildfire again. Don’t worry yes I will continue to wear my mask but you should have to also to protect others. It’s not a choice to follow laws we have in society to keep people safe. It should not be a choice to keep people safe during a pandemic that yes is still going on. Hardly anyone has been vaccinated yet but let’s all run wild. Duh that makes no sense

  17. Gov. Abbott did the right thing. Those who disagree are most welcome to continue wearing their masks. No one is going to rip it off your face. Quite simple.

    1. I have an autoimmune disease & unfortunately can’t take the COVID shot. I double mask if I go out. After a year of self quarantine I had just began to feel safer about going out. I will no longer feel safe to leave my home.

  18. It should’ve been our CHOICE from the very beginning… The ones who wear masks and have been vaccinated should NOT be worried or in fear of catching a virus that they feel they are protecting themselves against…

    1. Actually there should have been heavy penalties and jail for those who did not wear one ttom the beginning. Those , like you, who didn’t wear one are also responsible for those who died.

    2. If you don’t know, none of the vaccines have a sterilization component incorporated into them, which means while you do receive antibodies that will protect you against the virus, it does not mean that the vaccination will kill the virus (if you are carrying it). Simply put, a vaccinated person with both doses and the two to three week buildup period afterward, could still carry the virus and pass it along to others while remaining a symptomatic. While other vaccines, such as measles, mumps, rubella, etc do have a sterilization component, the urgency with which the current vaccines were designed did not allow that to be incorporated.
Similarly, the reason operating room nurses and physicians wear masks is to minimalize the chance that bacteria from their bodies might be transmitted to the person on whom the operation is being performed–it’s not for the safety of the doctors or nurses.
