MISSING CONNECTICUT CHILDREN LAST SEEN IN SEALY FOUND SAFE

Three children taken from their home in Connecticut and last seen in Sealy have been found safe.

Police said 7-year-old Maddison McGrath, 5-year-old Dylan McGrath, and 2-year-old Maryah Mathew were flown back to Waterbury, Connecticut on Saturday, and will be returned to their legally appointed guardian.

According to Waterbury Police Chief Fernando Spagnolo, the three children were found in Mexico, in the port city of Mazatlan. Spagnolo said police in Mexico assisted U.S. marshals to take the two responsible for their abduction into custody.

The non-custodial mother, 29-year-old Crystal McGrath, and her boyfriend, 38-year-old Lester Joy, are being held by the Denton County Sheriff’s Office, near Dallas. They will be held there until they are returned to Connecticut.

McGrath and Joy, who is also a registered sex offender, have been charged with three counts of Risk of Injury and three counts of Custodial Interference.

The search for the children began on February 16th, when McGrath took them from a Waterbury McDonald’s during a supervised visit with the Department of Children and Families. An Amber alert was issued a week later out of Sealy for the children, last seen in a red Volvo driven by Joy.

Investigation found that the couple drove through several southern states, and eventually crossed the border into Mexico. Marshals learned early this month they had stayed at a hotel in Juarez, and found them in Mazatlan a few days later, driving the same vehicle.

Investigators are still attempting to determine why the couple traveled into Mexico with the children.
