MUSTANGS CLOBBER CUBS IN OPENER, 61-21
Magnolia West dominated the third quarter, 27-0, as they rolled past the Brenham Cubs in the season opener, 61-21 at Cubs Stadium, Friday night.
The Cubs (0-1) trailed 27-14 at the half, but the Mustangs (1-0) came out on fire after the intermission, as they took advantage of numerous Cub miscues.
The Mustangs led, 13-7 at the end of the first quarter on a pair of touchdown passes from John Matocha to Payton Finch and Simon Gonzalez.
The Cubs’ first touchdown of the season came on their opening drive of the season, when Zayvon Smith capped a 71-yard drive with a 6-yard scoring run.
After two more Mustang scores, Colby Watts caught a 44-yard scoring pass and run from Garrison Weiss, cutting the lead to 27-14 at the break.
But on the opening drive of the second half, the Cubs stumbled with several penalties and that’s when the wheels came off.
The Mustangs scored four touchdowns in a 4-and-a-half minute span, aided by three Cubs’ turnovers. Haydon Burge scored three of the touchdowns, on runs of 8, 15 and 11 yards.
Wesley Bagley and Marcus Robinson added scoring runs before the Cubs capped a 67-yard eight-play drive with a 2-yard run by Daylonn McCowan.
Tyree Jackson led the Cubs’ offense with 67 yards on 11 carries. Quarterback Garrison Weiss completed 5 of 7 passes for 86 yards and a touchdown. Alldyn Schroeder completed 3-of-3 passes for 32 yards. Eight different Cubs caught one pass each.
The Cubs will hit the road next Friday night to face longtime rival Waller at 7:30, with a 7:00 pre-game on AM-1280 KWHI, FM 101.7 and www.kwhi.com.

So proud of the Brenham Cubs! The Best is yet to come this year. The first touchdown of the football season was made by Zyron Smith #23 the article misspelled his name but it is Z-y-r-o-n Smith #23?
WoW! I think the clobbered Cubs will come back strong next week and get back to a winning season. It’s akways hard when a new coach comes after another coach has taught a team for years and years.
The Cubs will be fine and just has to be an all around team effort and one loss doesn’t define a teams seson.
Good Luck Cubs!!!
