NAMI-BV EXPANDS MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES IN BRENHAM

The National Alliance on Mental Illness of Brazos Valley (NAMI-BV) has announced increased services in Brenham in an effort to ensure that the mental health needs of the community are met.

One in four adults experiences a mental health problem in any given year and almost half of all adults experience a diagnosable mental illness within their lifetime. Yet Washington and the surrounding counties have very little mental health resources. Often individuals and family members have to drive to Bryan-College Station, Houston or Austin to get the help they need.

NAMI BV, the area’s largest grassroots nonprofit dedicated to helping individuals and families with mental health issues, offers free support and education. Located in Bryan, the organization services all 7 counties of the Brazos Valley, including Washington County.

This spring, families can stay in town and participate in the following no-cost education and support services offered by NAMI-BV:

  • Faith-based “Care and Share” support group for individuals experiencing mental health issues will begin on March 26 and run every Sunday from 4:00-5:30pm at the Church of Christ. This support group is facilitated by certified support group professionals with lived experience with mental illness.
  • NAMI Partnerships is a six-session educational program designed for family members and mental health professionals. This evidence-based class begins March 28 at noon, and provides a variety of mental health information from psychiatric treatments to the phases of accepting the illness.
  • Thanks to sponsorship from Brenham’s own Innocor Foam Technologies, NAMI Homefront, an adult education class offered for veterans and military families will be held Mondays and Thursdays, April 10-27 from 6:00pm - 8:30pm in Brenham. This six-session educational program is by family members and service members with lived experiences and is designed to address the unique needs of family, caregivers, friends and those who have served our country.

“As a resident of Brenham, I am pleased to be extending our services in this area,” says Jody Schulz, Executive Director of NAMI Brazos Valley. “Mental health issues affect everyone - and affect our ability to live, laugh and love.”

NAMI BV also clarified that anyone is eligible to attend these free classes, regardless of residential location. To register for or get more information about NAMI Brazos Valley, email Julie Overstreet at mailto:joverstreet@namibv.orgor go to www.namibv.org.
