NAVASOTA STUDENT BREAKS NOSE AFTER GAME OF TAG AT SCHOOL

The parents of a Navasota middle school student are expressing concern of how an accident with their daughter was handled during a game of tag during P.E. class.

The student, 5th grader Mary Alfaro, was in P.E. class playing a game of tag, commonly known as Sharks and Minnows. Another student pushed her into the wall, breaking her nose and bruising her face.

Alfaro says she doesn’t remember much of the incident.

Her mother, Isabelle Alfaro, is concerned because two students escorted Mary to the office instead of a school official or the school nurse. She also questions why an ambulance wasn’t called. She ended up driving her to the hospital herself.

Navasota ISD Superintendent Rory Gesch says that the parent is consulted first unless it is a life-threatening situation, and that they followed up with the coach on proper procedure. Gesch says that since the gym is not connected, they have instructed teacher to use their cell phones to contact the front office, and then have the nurse come to the site.

The superintendent says they are reviewing procedures to see how a situation like this could be better handled in the future.

Mary will be back at school after spring break, and has a doctor appointment on Tuesday to see if she will need surgery to repair her nose.
