NEW ANIMAL SHELTER CLOSER TO BEGINNING CONSTRUCTION

Brenham’s new animal shelter is a little closer to becoming a reality.

Construction bids for the new Brenham Pet Adoption and Care Center are due by February 12th.  Brenham Police Chief Rex Phelps says ten contractors and several subcontractors attended a pre-bid meeting last week.  The new animal shelter, which will be built on City land next to the police station, is expected to cost $2 million.  The City Council has authorized spending $1 million of the total, with the remainder coming through public fundraising.  According to the shelter’s fundraising website, ahomefornow.com, $897,566 has been raised so far, which includes a $500,000 contribution from an anonymous donor.

The City’s current animal shelter, the Donald G. Austin Memorial Animal Shelter, is located at 2007 Old Chappell Hill Road.  City officials have said that is has fallen into disrepair, has structural issues, and is not large enough for the City’s future needs.
