NEW SCHOOL YEAR BRINGS CHANGES IN TRUANCY LAWS

Beginning this fall, the rules governing truancy will undergo another change.

House Bill 2398, recently changed by the Texas Legislature, now considers truancy, or the missing of ten or more days of school a civil matter, after previously considering it a criminal offense.

The new law goes into effect on September 1st, and will no longer include a fine of $500 for missing school.

Parents who allow their students to not attend school will be fine $100 each time. And the students will still have to go in front of a judge to explain their actions.

A judge has the option to waive the $50 court fee imposed for each infraction.
