NFL REFEREE ‘RED’ CASHION DIES AT 87

Long-time Bryan/College Station resident, Brazos County business owner and prolific NFL referee Red Cashion, died Sunday morning.

During his 25 years in the NFL Red Cashion officiated nearly 500 games, including Super Bowl XX and Super Bowl XXX and 16 other postseason games.

Cashion was known for his thunderous call of “FIRST DOWN!!!”  He was also featured in several season of the hugely successful Madden Football video game.

He was also a featured speaker at several events in Washington County and was a guest at several refereeing clinics held at the old Spencer Stadium on the Blinn College Campus.  Following the clinics Cashion was known to visit and share anecdotes from his career with aspiring officials.

He was also the longtime owner of Anco Insurance in Bryan.

A celebration of life will be held next Monday at 10 a.m. at A&M United Methodist Church.
