Bats come alive in second game as Blinn knocks 11 hits to avoid the sweep

BRENHAM, Texas – The bats for Blinn College softball came alive in the second game to help the Buccaneers earn a 10-2 victory in six innings over San Jacinto College-South at Hohlt Park in Brenham Friday afternoon.

San Jacinto did shut out Blinn in the first game for a 2-0 victory to split the doubleheader. With the split, Blinn’s record moves to 25-14 overall and 10-2 in Region XIV play.

San Jacinto 2 – Blinn 0

Blinn spoiled a solid pitching performance from Faith Genoway as the run support never showed up and San Jacinto came away with a 2-0 shutout victory to open the doubleheader.

Genoway pitched all seven innings and gave up seven hits and two earned runs while striking out five in the loss in the circle.

The Buccaneers could only muster three hits in the game as Meghann Wrinkle, Katie Andrie and Katy Sawyer each had a single but Blinn only had a runner reach as far as second base once in the fifth inning. San Jacinto scored once in the fourth and seventh innings for all the run support needed for the visiting team.

Blinn 10 – San Jacinto 2

Blinn didn’t waste any time scoring in the second game with five runs in the opening inning on its way to a 10-2 mercy rule victory in six innings over San Jacinto to earn the split.

Courtney White and Alyssa Hitt each brought in two runs as Hitt had a single and White nailed two singles, including the walk-off hit in the sixth inning. Wrinkle, Jordin Wilkins, Sawyer, Tori Gleason and Kalli Edwards each had an RBI in the landslide victory.

Sam Junkin had a solid start in the second game by pitching five innings and allowing two earned runs on six hits while striking out a pair. Genoway came on in the sixth to earn the save in a scoreless inning.

After San Jacinto scored a single run on the top of the first, Blinn didn’t waste any time in the bottom half to get some offense going. Wrinkle got it going with a one-out single and then later tied the game at 1-1 after scoring on a San Jacinto throwing error.

Wilkins gave Blinn the lead with a single up the middle for a 2-1 advantage. Sawyer followed with a single back up the middle to bring in one run for a 3-1 edge. Gleason and Edwards drew back-to-back walks with the bases loaded to give the Buccaneers a 5-1 lead after an inning. San Jacinto did score one in the fourth to get within 5-2.

After four consecutive scoreless innings, Blinn got the offense going again when Edwards singled to get on and then later scored on a Wrinkle single up the middle for a 6-2 lead. Both Nicole Garcia and Wrinkle scored on a throwing error for an 8-2 advantage. White took the opportunity to close out the game early with a two-run single to right to make the score 10-2 and end the game one inning early.

After eight consecutive games at home, Blinn will hit the road on Friday, April 1 to face Lamar State College – Port Arthur for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. The Buccaneers swept Port Arthur at home on March 22.
