NO. 20 BLINN OPENS MIDLAND INVITE WITH SWEEPS OVER WESTERN TEXAS AND RANGER

Shelby Sheets leads the Buccaneers’ offense with 36 kills in first two wins of the season

MIDLAND, Texas — No. 20 Blinn College volleyball (2-1) picked up its’ first two wins of the season by sweeping Western Texas College, 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-11) and Ranger College (25-9, 25-19, 25-18) to open the Midland College Invitational on Friday afternoon.
“I am really excited to get my first win at Blinn College,” said Terry Gamble, head coach. “I’m so happy for the girls and cannot thank the Blinn College District Chancellor Dr. Mary Hensley and athletic director Scott Schumacher enough for this opportunity.”
Sophomore Shelby Sheets was an offensive force for the Buccaneer in both matches as she led the team with 15 kills against Western Texas and 21 kills against Ranger.

Blinn 3 – Western Texas 0
The Buccaneers claimed their first win of the season by sweeping Western Texas, 3-0, to open the Midland College Invitational.
Sheets posted a .538 hitting percentage to record 15 kills, while also posting six digs. Julia Fritz led the defense with nine digs, while Samantha Boatman and Roxanne Morris led Blinn with 15 assists each. Morris managed the second-highest amount of kills in the match with eight.
The Buccaneers and the Westerners played two close first sets, but Blinn came out on top 25-19 in the first set and 25-17 in the second set. The Buccaneers claimed the sweep after downing Western Texas 25-11 in the third set.

Blinn 3 – Ranger 0
Blinn closed out the first day of the tournament with an undefeated record after sweeping Ranger, 3-0.
Sheets recorded a season-high 21 kills and hit .474 during the match, while recording 13 digs. Fritz led the defense with 15 digs, while Morris tallied 21 assists and nine digs.
The Buccaneers easily pulled ahead in the match after defeating Ranger 25-9 in the first set. Blinn kept the momentum in its’ favor after winning the second set 25-19 and claimed the sweep with a 25-18 win.
The Buccaneers will play in two game to close out the Midland College Invitational on Saturday, Aug. 25. First, Blinn will face No. 19 Trinity Valley at 10 a.m. and then Midland College at noon.
