PLEASANT HILL SCHOOL TO RECEIVE HISTORICAL MARKER

One of Washington County’s oldest schools will be given a historical marker on Sunday, March 19th during a special ceremony.

Pleasant Hill School, which dates back to the 1800s, will be dedicated during a program at 2 p.m. at the school’s location- 500 Pleasant Hill School Road. A reception will follow the ceremony on Sunday at Salem Lutheran Church fellowship hall.

Pleasant Hill is located in southernmost Washington County on Williams Creek four miles southeast of Brenham off State Highway 36. According to the Texas State Historical Association, the town was originally named Krug after Kenney Krug, who operated a store in the community.

The community changed its name to Pleasant Hill on March 29, 1878. By 1882 the town had a population of 350,  two churches, and the school.

Classes were held in the school there until 1963.

    1. No, you were really there Rose Mary and so was the neat old wooden schoolhouse with two teachers and about 50-60 other kids, including me. The Pleasant Hill School was open for grades 1-5 until May 1966. It was very cost efficient cause it was heated in the spring and fall and cool all winter long. We even had a water fountain, with cool water!!. Best school, ever!

  1. Is the date for how long classes were held there correct? I attended school there until 1965 when my father passed away and I moved.

    1. All the country schools consolidated at the same time. My last year at Pleasant Hill was when I graduated from the 8th grade in 1962.
That was the last of Pleasant Hill and all the little country schools.
