PROGRAM TO HELP SENIORS GET WORK

Getting a job has been a challenge in recent years but it became especially hard for older workers.

Faith Mission in Brenham, working with the Brenham Heritage Museum,  Forever Young , and MH-MR are all working together with the U.S. Department of Labor and Experience Works, have developed the SeniService Employment Program to help older workers find and keep jobs.

These assignments include performing clerical duties at non-profit organizations at thrift stores or food pantries, keeping parks and buildings clean, assisting in recycling centers, assisting in classrooms, preparing meals and providing recreation for older individuals  at senior centers.  In addition to the community service assignments, participants in the SCEP Program can get help accessing needed services, updating their employment skills, and developing a job search plan.

The Rev. Randy Wells, the Deputy Executive Director for Faith Mission says the ‘Experience Works’ program is a wonderful opportunity to provide training and job opportunities to older workers and seniors who have contributed to our society over their life-time and still want to be active and involved in the workforce/community.

Anyone 55 and older and interested in finding out if they qualify for the program they can call the Brenham office in the Washington County Health and Service Center at 251 9882 and ask for Connie at extension 254.

  1. I can understand if seniors WANT to stay active, but we’re living in an age where some older Americans CAN’T afford to retire, and that is just sad.
