RESIGNATION OF BOARD MEMBER, EMPLOYMENT OF HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL ON AGENDA FOR BURTON SCHOOL BOARD

The Burton School Board will consider the resignation of a board member and employment of a new high school principal at Monday’s meeting.

Superintendent Dr. Edna Kennedy declined to name the board member resigning, and the new one being appointed. She said that information would be provided at the meeting.

Following the agenda items dealing with the resignation and appointment, an item is listed that reads “Consider Nominations for Secretary”. Linda Hasten currently holds the secretary position, as well as a seat on the board.

The board will also receive a recommendation from Dr. Kennedy for a candidate for the high school principal. The name of the candidate being considered has not been released.  Dr. Kennedy said the school had seven applicants for the position, with a few others showing interest but not applying.

The school district posted the position on October 23rd, following current principal Karen Steenken’s announcement that she would be retiring January 31, 2019. Steenken presented her resignation letter to the district on October 2nd after 30 years in education, 16 of those in Burton.

The board will also consider allowing the reception of bids and awarding of a lease for mineral development. Dr. Kennedy said GeoSouthern has sent an offer to enter into an oil, gas and mineral lease on over 6.6 acres of property, which was previously owned by the school district.  She said the district has to go through a specific process to be able to act on this.

Board members will also consider two bids received for the sale of a portable building, currently being used as storage. In addition, the board will give tokens of appreciation to teachers, for the holidays.  Dr. Kennedy said this expense isn’t monetary and is already in the budget, but auditors say it needs board approval.

Board members will also hear reports from the principal, athletic director, and superintendent. The board will then meet in executive session to discuss personnel, along with district safety and security.

The board will meet Monday night at 6:30 p.m. at the Administration Office on 701 North Railroad Street in Burton.
