One of Washington County’s rural fire chiefs has passed away.

Salem Fire Chief John Santos died suddenly, sometime this weekend.

Santos’ body was found early this (Monday) morning at Time Well Spent on Blue Bell Road in Brenham.

Santos had been a member of the Salem Volunteer Fire Department since 1996.  He had been the chief of the department since March of 2014.

Santos’ body was taken to Memorial Oaks Chapel.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been made.

  1. To: John Family , He was like my son I took him under my wings and natured him into becoming a great solider. He had a big heart , always helping others when ever , and what ever were needed of him. I will miss you dearly my military son RIP. Praying for the family !

  4. We would see this young man come into HEB. I didn’t know him, but you could tell he was someone special. We are shocked and saddened at his passing. Our prayers and condolences to the family.

  5. Sweet John…reading these post was the same person I worked with at Walmart. It was a special honor to know him. There was just something that he possessed that made him rise above many. His character, work ethic and devotion to his family were amazing! I was so impressed, at a young age, to have the values he had. He was so proud of his mom, and she was proud of him…. May blessings rain upon his family……

  11. John you have always treated me with respect. You were a very likable person to those that knew you. You will be missed. You were very proud to with the Salem Fire Station and achieving the title chief. We are glad Anita and got to see you when we stayed at La Quinta. Rest in Peace my friend.

  12. I had the pleasure of watching John grow up and being his friend along with his mother and grandmother in the “Egypt” bottom. Rest in peace good and faithful servant.

    1. I remember riding the bus with him. The bus would stop at his house in Egypt to pick him up. He was so nice! So sad to hear of this.
