SAN ANTONIO CITY COUNCIL APPROVES ALAMO REDEVELOPMENT PLAN
San Antonio’s City Council recently approved a redevelopment plan for the Alamo, worth nearly $500 million dollars.
On Thursday, the council voted for the $450 million proposal, after months of back-and-forth between residents and city officials.
Certain elements of the plan drew ire from the public, such as the decision to move the 1930s Cenotaph, a monument dedicated to the defenders of the Alamo in the battle of 1836.
Some of the plan’s details include a 50-year lease which allows the Texas Land Office to manage and control the plaza, the building of a museum, and closing off the plaza with barriers and fences.
Mayor Ron Nirenberg applauded the decision, saying it will help give the Alamo “the reverent treatment it deserves”.
