SCHOOL BOARD TO DISCUSS NEW SCHOOL DAYS LAW

The Brenham School Board and Superintendent Walter Jackson will discuss a new law that went into effect January first that could mean extra days of for both students and staff.

The new state law requires students to be at school for a total of 75,600 minutes instead of the traditional 180 days.

Some school districts are already taking advantage of the new law, extending the school day by several minutes to allow them more flexibility with their calendars and days off.

Dr. Jackson says that while there currently are no plans to lengthen the local school days, it is something he and the board will be examining and discussing at Tuesday’s workshop session.

Jackson says it is something that could be considered in the future.

Also at Tuesday’s workshop meeting, the board will also be discussing the balancing of demographics in the elementary schools and the budget for the next school year.

The meeting is strictly a workshop session and no items will be voted on.

The board will meet at noon at the district’s central office at 711 Mansfield Street.
