SEALY ACTING POLICE CHIEF DEMOTED

City Manager Chris Coffman has demoted Acting Sealy Police Chief Jay Reeves from captain to lieutenant after Reeves made a social media comment about Coffman’s lack of support for him to serve as Chief.

Reeves, who was named interim chief several times before named acting chief on December 12, replaced John Tollett, who retired last month.

The command staff consist of Reeves and Lt. Scott Riske.

The demotion does not have the support of Mayor Mark Stolarski, who issued this statement to The Sealy News:

“I do not concur with City Manager Chris Coffman's demotion of Captain Reeves. Coffman showed me a copy of the statements Reeves made on social media in response to questions asked by a citizen. The statements made by Captain Reeves were factually accurate, did not violate any city policy, and are protected by every citizen's right to freedom of speech. Captain Reeves has given over 20 years of his life in loyal service to our community and Coffman's personal disagreement with Captain Reeves' comments should not be a factor in the continuation of his service. I support the reversal of this decision and the removal of this from Captain Reeves' personnel record."

Reeves has contracted a regional attorney with the Texas Municipal Police Association and says they will appeal the demotion, and will not discuss the case at this time.

  1. well, the city manager just PROVED what the ACTING police chief said, OMG, get up out of the playpen…and if he said that he didn’t have the support needed from the city manager, the city manager just proved that he did not support him. Good grief….
