SEALY ISD RESPONDING TO POTENTIAL BACTERIAL MENINGITIS CASE

Sealy ISD officials are warning parents about a possible case of bacterial meningitis in a student.

The school district issued a warning statement on its Facebook page Monday, saying while test results have been inconclusive at this point, staff are working to disinfect all campuses. The district said it is taking every available precaution to prevent the spread of disease.

The district added that it is treating this situation as a district-wide concern—not as a campus concern—as its community is small, and students interact across campuses.

The district said, as it has been more than ten days since the affected student was on the campus, and students exposed at the campus would have already shown symptoms at this point, the concern is not campus-specific anymore.   It said it felt it was more prudent to alert all parents to the concern, since it does not know who may have come into contact with the student over Thanksgiving break.

Symptoms of bacterial meningitis include high fever, chills, headache, drowsiness, rash, and neck stiffness. Symptoms can occur quickly or over several days.  The illness can spread through direct contact like kissing or drinking after one another, and indirect contact like sharing utensils or toothbrushes, coughing or sneezing.

The district asked parents to follow district guidelines, to keep their children home from school if they have a fever of 100.3 degrees or higher, and to consult a physician if they experience any symptoms.
