SEASON ENDS FOR BLINN WOMEN

Offense goes cold for Buccaneers in overtime loss to Bossier Parish, 89-78

JACKSONVILLE, Texas – Blinn College women’s basketball had enough to force its quarterfinal game into overtime but in the overtime period the offense went cold and Bossier Parish Community College pulled away for an 89-78 victory in the Region XIV Tournament March 4 in Jacksonville.

Chant Lewis did hit a 3-pointer at the end of regulation to tie the game up at 72-72 but the Buccaneers only scored six points in the overtime period as opposed to 17 points scored by Bossier Parish. With the loss, Blinn will finish the season with a 20-11 record.

Alexus Freeman led the way for Blinn with 16 points but she ran into foul trouble and fouled out before the end of the game. Foul trouble plagued the Buccaneers in the overtime period and put a strain on the offense.

Penina Faumui tossed in 11 points while Brianna Luton chipped in 10 points. Moe Bedford, Lewis and Katelynn Johnson each had eight points in the loss.

Neither team could grab much of the momentum for the entire game as Bossier Parish held a slim 28-27 lead at the half. It appeared that Bossier Parish would keep that momentum at the end of regulation as it held a 72-69 lead after making one of two free throws with 4.4 seconds left.

That is when Lewis was able to find a little space at the 3-point line to sink one from beyond the arc to knot the game at 72-72. Unfortunately for Blinn, the momentum from that shot didn’t carry over into the overtime period as the Buccaneers went 2-of-14 from the field in getting outscored 17-6 in the extra period.

“You have to hand it to Bossier Parish because they came out and played hard,” said Blinn head coach Jeff Jenkins. “We had a great group of sophomores and I wish them the best at their new school.”
