SEVEN YEAR OLD BOY KILLED WHEN HIT BY MINIVAN

A seven year old Brenham boy is dead after he wandered onto Highway 290 and was stuck by a vehicle.

According to the Department of Public Safety, the boy, 7-year-old Jorge Torres, was hit by a 2012 Dodge Caravan minivan around 6pm on Wednesday near the Schroeder Mobile Home Park off Highway 290 East.

Authorities say the child, who is autistic, crawled out of his bedroom window. His mother was in another room at the time.

When she noticed he was gone, she began searching the property.

The woman driving the minivan, Margaret Arrieta of Houston, was eastbound on Highway 290. Arrieta told officers she saw the boy, who was wearing dark clothing, at the last minute and attempted to swerve to miss him, but was unable to do so.

Torres was taken to Scott and White Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The mother of the child and the woman driving the minivan will face no charges. However, the incident is still under investigation.

The Brenham Police Department, as well as the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and fire officials responded to the scene.
