SHERIFF WARNS ABOUT I.R.S. SCAM

Washington County Sheriff Otto Hanak is warning citizens to be wary of a scam that’s going around right now.

Sheriff Hanak says he’s heard from a slew of local residents that they’re getting calls from someone claiming to be from the I.R.S.

The caller tells the person that they owe the government over $30,000 in back taxes and that the Sheriff’s Office will come for them if they don’t settle immediately for 10% of the outstanding debt—or $3,000.

And the caller can settle with money cards or a credit card number.

Sheriff Hanak says he’s received over a half-dozen calls in the past several days alone, and that some people believe the callers.

Hanak assures everyone that his office has not been told to “go get anyone” over back taxes.

He says citizens need to be extra cautious and not fall for such a scam.

  1. These scammers are counting on people being afraid of going to jail or their home and other possessions being taken away from them. It’s our duty to inform as many friends and neighbors as possible. I would rather be told they already are aware of the scam than to learn they fell victim to the scam.

  2. Both I and my other half were targeted by these IRS scammers! Just remember the IRS always contacts you by mail not by phone. So just hang up on these people no matter
    what they say….
