SHERIFF’S OFFICE REPORTS PHONE SCAM IN COUNTY

If you receive a phone call saying there is a warrant out for your arrest for missing jury duty, don’t believe it.  The Washington County Sheriff’s office is reporting that a number of local residents have fallen victim to the scam.  Chief Deputy Jay Petrash says that the caller is giving out a number to call to settle the fine.  The number the scammers are currently using is 979-251-7997.  When the victim calls this number, it is answered by someone claiming to be with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and the caller is given several options in order to make a payment.  Petrash says that people who miss jury duty are not contacted by phone, and that they would never be asked to settle a fine with a credit card or any kind of over the phone payment.  Petrash says that the same scam is also being used, but with the caller claiming to be with the Brenham Police Department.  If you receive a scam phone call, please contact the actual non-emergency dispatch number of 979-277-7373 and dispatch will connect you with the correct law enforcement agency.
