The Shiro Volunteer Fire Department was recently granted $38,000 by the Texas A&M Forest Service.

The VFD says it will use the funds to purchase a new slip-on unit with a compressed air foam system, which comes equipped with a 300-gallon water tank.  The air foam system delivers fire-retardant foam which can increase efficiency of the water.

Shiro VFD Fire Chief Dan Sharron says the lack of fire hydrants in the department’s service area—roughly 76-square-miles—makes it that much more important to be able to carry enough water to the scene of a fire.  He says the new system can be used on several kinds of fires, including grass fires.

The Texas A&M Forest Service assists small fire departments with its Rural Volunteer Fire Department Assistance Program, which provides funding for fire and rescue vehicles, equipment, and training.

Shiro Volunteer Fire Department was founded in 1982 and enlists 13 volunteers.
