SOUPER BOWL OF CARING HELPS LOCAL HUNGRY PEOPLE

The Souper Bowl of Caring was a big success but Dock Williams of the Brenham HEB hopes to do better in the future.

The food drive, held two weeks before the Super Bowl football game, raised roughly $15,000 in food and money to help feed the hungry in Washington County.

Williams said shoppers would buy five and  ten dollar bags of groceries for those in need, to fill the Faith Mission Food Pantry.  Williams said he hoped for more and will continue to work for that goal.

Williams said he was especially grateful for the Cornerstone Christian Center and its pastor, John Paul Cruz.  Williams said he came in with ‘his boys’ help in the drive and backed the volunteer effort up with a ‘substantial contribution.  Williams also thanked the Sunday School fund of the Mt. Rose Missionary Baptist Church, New Life,  auto dealer Jon Hill and restaurants Manuel’s and Sealand.

The Rev. Randy Wells of Faith Mission says they have expanded their mission over the past 29 years since they learned that people need more than food and clothing.  Wells said however, that they need to begin by feeding hungry people before they go on to help with housing, jobs and educational training and health care. Wells said the Souper Bowl of Caring is especially helpful because there is always a long line whenever the food pantry is open.  He notes that the food from the Brazos Valley Food Bank does not come for free and they need donations.

Faith Mission continues to serve the needs of between three and four hundred people each month, with food and shelter, clothing and continues on with jobs training.
