SPRINGER/ASTROS AGREE TO ONE-YEAR DEAL–AVOID ARBITRATION

The Houston Astros and outfielder George Springre have agreed to a one-year deal to avoid arbitration.

MLB.com is reporting the deal is worth $21 million.

Springer was selected as an All-Star for the third straight season in 2019, setting career highs in batting average (.292), home runs (39), and RBIs (96).

He has hit at least 20 home runs in five of his six seasons for the Astros and was named the 2017 World Series MVP.

Meanwhile, the Astros have interviewed Buck Showalter and John Gibbons for their managerial vacancy.

The Astros interviewed Gibbons yesterday and Showalter on Wednesday, two days after they fired manager AJ Hinch and general manager Jeff Luhnow.

Showalter, a three-time American League Manager of the Year, last managed in 2018 with the Baltimore Orioles.  Gibbons managed the Blue Jays to back-to-back appearances in the ALCS in 2015 and 2016.
