STATE PARKS, HISTORIC SITES TRANSFER TO TEXAS HISTORICAL COMMISSION SEPTEMBER 1ST

Starting September 1st, operation and maintenance of six Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) sites will transfer to the Texas Historical Commission (THC).

The Star of the Republic Museum at Washington-on-the-Brazos.

The 86th Legislature approved House Bill 1422, which transfers operational control of these sites to the THC.  These include the Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site, San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site and Monument, Fanthorp Inn State Historic Site, Monument Hill and Kreische Brewery State Historic Site, Lipantitlan State Historic Site, and Port Isabel Lighthouse State Historic Site.

These six sites are the newest additions to the 22 sites under THC management.

TPWD Executive Director Carter Smith said the department is proud to have cared for the historic sites for several decades, and that it is confident the THC will “continue these high standards of maintenance and operations moving forward”.

THC Executive Director Mark Wolfe said the commission welcomes the opportunity to “continue the preservation of these unique sites for new generations of visitors to enjoy”.

A list of all state parks can be found at the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department website.  For a list of sites operated by the Texas Historical Commission, visit www.storiedsites.com.
