TEXAS INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION SLATED FOR THIS WEEKEND

Celebration plans for Texas Independence Day are in high gear, with two days of celebrations planned, including music, period re-enactors, crafts and speeches.

Both Saturday and Sunday will host festivities on the historic grounds at Washington-on-the Brazos State Park, which will include speeches from state Senator Lois Kolkhorst and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick.

Monday marks the 179th anniversary of the signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence, which Texas declared itself independent from Mexico.

One of the highlights this year will be a re-dedication of Independence Hall, which is a re-creation of the structure where 59 delegates met and signed the Declaration of Independence.

Jim Kolkhorst, president of the park association, has this to say about this weekend’s celebration.

Kolkhorst also talks about the public ceremony and “The Cake.”

Star of the Republic museum director Houston McGaugh says this celebration is important because it shows the dominance of democracy.

He says that he even though the site is not as famous as places such as the Alamo or San Jacinto, it is still an historically important site as a beacon of democracy.
