THIRD CASE OF COVID-19 CONFIRMED IN WASHINGTON CO.

Washington County now has its third confirmed case of COVID-19.

The announcement was made by Washington County Emergency Management Coordinator Bryan Ruemke during an emergency meeting of Washington County Commissioners this (Thursday) afternoon at Washington County EMS Station #2.

Update @ 5:35 p.m.: According to County Judge John Durrenberger, the third confirmed case is in a male employee of Brenham Chrysler Jeep Dodge.  Durrenberger said the dealership is voluntarily closing for 14 days in order to protect its employees and take any necessary precautions.

The county’s second case was confirmed by Ruemke this morning to be in a man in his 60s.  Ruemke stated, while the cause of the second case was under investigation, it was believed to be community spread.

No other information was given on the second or third confirmed cases.

The first case of the virus was confirmed Wednesday to be in a male in his 40s who works for the City of Brenham.

KWHI will add to this story as soon as new information becomes available.

  1. So that’s why the shops should close. Out of towners come to shop and the virus is unknowingly spread. It’s here. There are alot of senior citizens, some people with compromised health problems…do you really want to risk their lives for money in the cash register?

  2. Some of the comments here are troubling. Just to clarify, it IS the job of local officials to protect it’s citizens, so phrases like “it’s up to you to protect yourself” is only a part of the equation. The other part requires legal authority to ensure compliance, because “yourself” only gets you so far. This virus is extremely contagious, and although you might take sensible precautions, the virus is still airborne. All it takes is a strong enough breeze to overcome social distancing, if someone is coughing in your vicinity. And for the last time, until we have tested/proven treatments for this virus, IT IS NOT LIKE A COLD/FLU.

  3. It is what It is! I totally agree that we are adults to abide by ourself to take our precautions for our protection and safety, BUT, there are people that simple think it’s not serious, it’s a joke, or don’t care. In that case, authorities needs to to act now! take measures , until then, we hope and pray they obey. One, two weeks does nothing! What will happen the other week? and the other? If people are sick, do not know it yet? And the virus is still spreading? QUARANTEE for a month or two. Like I said, it is hard! It is what It is. Safety comes first! Lets work together as a community who cares for ourself, our families, our friends and others. Only then will we overcome! Lets pray and hope this season passes and soon. With that said, start With YOU! STAY HOME! that is the best way to start! And probably end this. People you need to put your part too. Do not let authorities Do not all! What will it take, for you to become really sick? Or soneone you love dies? Luck you get it, fight it and servive, And for those that don’t? PLEASE STAY HOME!

  4. Hey everyone that’s the point WE ARE NOT DOING WHAT WE ARE SUPPOSED TO BE DOING and now it’s here and it’s SPREADING!
WE DON’T GO THE SPEED LIMIT when we want to ” get there” thats just a example. All the shops are open in brenham to make that last dollar….I HAVE BILLS you say but your going to be the death of us. Or at least my grandmother. I won’t forget or forgive.

  5. Its all ridiculous how easy the public panics over what is essentially a cold/flu virus. Deaths from influenza each year are right at the numbers reported so the only change is the reporting by news media using the word “pandemic”. Look, these cases that are popping up in random places in random people who have no tie to foreign travelers at all go against everything first reported about the virus. It is more proof they are riding the spread of the common cold and flu and building it up to put people in panic mode for some other purpose. My money is on a mandatory vaccine that normally would be met by opppsition or something drug related that needs funding. Thats the pattern that history shows over n over….

    1. There are no natural immunities/antibodies or therapies for Covid-19 which makes ANY comparison to influenza absolutely ridiculous. It is a novel virus which means it is new and therefore it is unknown as to the patterns the virus may take unlike the seasonal flu. The mortality rate is higher than the flu which means should Covid-19 infect as many as the flu, death rates will be much higher. Because most of us have followed the guidelines, the spread of the virus has been somewhat contained. Look no further than Italy for an example of what happens when distancing action is not taken. That pertains to little Brenham as well – those that don’t take this seriously, act like it is all a big overreaction and carry about your normal activities or are just plain stupid – will reap what you sow.

    2. Alan, this is NOT a flu. The flu kills about 112 people a week in the US, and remains fairly steady in its mortality rate. Covid-19 is already above 150 and climbing EVERY DAY. Flu spreads within 2-4 days, and has a mortality rate of less than .1% Covid-19 can spread over 14 days, increasing the likelihood of spreading it, and kills 2-4%.

This chart really drives it home. Look at the increase over normal flu.

    3. This is a horrible comparison. Flu or cold does not warrant massive amount of care by our medical community. Look at how it is overwhelming hospitals across the nation. Nurses and doctors are sick and dying across the country. We should all do our best to protect them by staying in and closing up for two weeks.

    4. Please, if anyone reads this comment, please do not be persuaded by anything he said. Look to reputable/official sources for information regarding covid-19… Your life, or the life of someone you care about, could depend on it.

    5. Also, lets stop talking for a minute in deaths/survival rates. This is a nasty illness if you get a bad case of it. Right now “mild” is being classified as not needing hospitalization or oxygen. There is also evidence that it can damage lungs, though we don’t know to what extent or how long the damage lasts.

The point being, you don’t want to get it and for the life of me I can’t understand why it takes such an effort to get people to understand that.

  6. Why should the government do “something”? Are we not adult enough to do for ourselves?

Where is that spirit of independence which is Texans best quality?

We have guidelines set by Federal, State and Local governments. Let’s be mature enough to follow them.

Do we really need a nanny state to tuck us in every night

  7. It amazes me that people have to be forced to do the right thing. Stay at home and wash your hands. Even when government steps in, there are still people that will ignore them.

  8. It’s not Brenham people out and about. People are coming from everywhere to shop.

    1. Oh right. Genius. People in Brenham NEVER go to BCS or Houston. How very Brenham to blame the outsiders.

  9. You people amaze me, you blame our elected officials for something YOU need to be doing!! They don’t have to “lockdown” Brenham for YOU to wash your hands, don’t touch your face, and stay home!! Too many of y’all have watched the movie Outbreak and think if you catch it it’s a death sentence. I’m not downplaying the severity of the situation, but quit blaming others and take care of things yourself!! We face “viruses” every single year. In the time that COVID-19 has killed approximately 1250, the flu has killed approximately 23000 in the US!! Again, this is a terrible situation, but quit blame game!!

  10. Okay, what are you going to do Judge Durrenberger? You know there are many more about to be “confirmed” cases. We elected you, protect us.

    1. IT IS NOT UP TO THE JUDGE TO PROTECT YOU….. IT IS UP TO YOU TO PROTECT YOURSELF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT ONLY TAKES 5 (FIVE) THINGS TO DO FOR YOURSELF THAT PROTECTS YOU FROM THIS VIRUS….. STOP LOOKING TO THE GOVERNMENT–LOCAL, STATE AND FEDERAL—TO HELP YOU WITH THIS…. COMMON SENSE IS THE MAIN INGREDIENT TO FIXING THE PROBLEM..

      1. I agree with you but…. if everyone doesn’t do it, then it does no good. If I isolate myself for 14 days and my neighbor doesn’t and he picks up virus on my 10th day of quarantine and carries it around another 10 days and gives it to me then I did my part for nothing. People n this town never take stuff serious. I bet if hot nights and cool tunes was gonna be this weekend there would be 300 people there. Sometimes government needs to enforce things because people are to stupid to do it themselves.

      2. Know one is listening, i have to morning and the evening am a homecare provider and I’ve seen folks everywhere js.

  11. Prayers for our city, our county and our country. Be safe. Stay home. Wash your hands.

    1. Ok Mayor Tate what are you gonna do to protect us Washington county citizens? People are everywhere enjoying as if there on a vacation!! We need a major shut down and curfew!! Please help us Mayor Tate

      1. Are you 5? Stay home and stop going out and looking at all these people you say are out and enjoying like their on vacation. How would you know if your not out running around like your on vacation yourself. People have lost all common sense, learn to think for yourself and stop trying to blame everyone else.

  12. Brenham looks like business as usual and tourist abound but if someones grandma or grandparents die of this virus it will be because of want for the almighty dollar out weighted those loved ones. What a shame.
When I vote locally I’ll remember.

    1. I agree. Even though the thousands of closed businesses, lost wages, bankruptcies, jobless claims in Washington County will occur if the Judge issues a full lock down “shelter in place” order, it is worth it if it saves even one resident of the county! Save us now.
