TWO HOUSTON-AREA MEN ARRESTED IN BRENHAM

Two Houston-area men are in Washington County Jail after their arrests in Brenham shortly after midnight.

Brenham Police Officer Kevin Mertz was patrolling in the 600 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway when he saw a man walking down the middle of the road.

Mertz stopped 22-year old Duante Louis Brown of Crosby, who said he was visiting a friend here, when his cousin had used his car and was now lost.

Mertz said Brown appeared nervous and was hiding his left side of his body, where Mertz says he saw a bulge in the front pocket of his jacket.

Mertz detained Brown and found a small handgun in his jacket.

Other officers arrived to assist, and detained the Brown’s cousin—23 year old Tommy Darnay Saulsberry of Houston, who had an outstanding warrant for assault/family violence.

During a search of Brown’s vehicle, two fluorescent safety vests were found; Brown said they were his for his work, but couldn't remember the name of the company.

Mertz transported the subject to the jail where authorities discovered he was carrying Xanax—that he didn’t have a prescription for.

Brown is charged with Unlawfully carrying a weapon and possession of a controlled substance in a drug free area.

Saulsberry is charged with a Probation violation warrant – assault/family violence.
