Two year old Caedon Olsen is the proud owner of a new 3-D prosthetic hand.

Caedon received his new hand today at Brenham High School Monday afternoon

This summer, BISD Career & Technology instructor Trenton Hall was approached by a young mother whose son was born without a hand, asking Coach Hall if it would be possible for his class to create and "print' a hand via 3D printing.

This technology allows a hand to be built  at a fraction of the cost of medically-produced ones.

Accepting the challenge, Coach Hall, researched the concept, and using open software code he and his class built this fully functioning prosthetic hand for the two year old.

Because Caedon is so young, his new hand will have to be “reprinted” every approximately every six months

Coach Hall requested the 3-D printer two years ago for his classroom, as he is convinced that teaching skills of design in manufacturing will continue to be a highly sought-after skill set. "I teach the foundation of code," said Hall, "That means I teach the basics that are required for students to start computer programming. We are building mini-apps, and developing simple games. If I can implement a real-life example in my class, it helps the reality of what they are learning come to life for my students. In this case, we were asked to engage in a real-life project that the kids were really excited to take on. It's things like this that make learning fun."

Coach Hall is fundraising for a new printer. The one they use now was $1500, and the new one they wish for is approximately $7,000

  1. Being able to meet the family and do the story was a true blessing…. I learned about Kaedon last month and thought it was just super cool ..
Seeing Kaedon use his hand for the first time was just amazing. He is such a sweet little boy and I can’t wait to see what he does next!!!!!

  2. This is very exciting as our adopted baby is 8 months old and has only 2 fingers and half palms. No surgery can correct his left is not as functional. He may be a candidate for this! My pastor saw the fb article.

  3. This is pretty awesome!! Not only the students are gaining hands on experience, exploring and expanding their imagination, they are also helping a child to live a normal life. This is great! I’m so happy for Kaedon and I’m so proud for the teacher and students that took part on this project. Great Job Guys!! N I hope that you guys can get the new printer to continue to explore and learn new technology and help others too.

  4. I’ve known caedon and his mother for about two years. This is very moving, what you have given this little boy is precious that we all take for granted. Bless all who took part in this selfless task. This shows there still are good people in the world.. prayers to the family and the students and staff who took part in this. Good things come to those who are deserving you will raise the funds for your new printer and then some.. God bless

  5. This is Kaedon’s mom. He is already trying to use the hand. Today he picked up his first item. He picked up a cup to take a drink from it. I was so excited and the look in his eyes was amazement and a smile fell across his face when he realized what he had done. Thank you Coach Hall and all that worked on it.

    1. I’m the guy in the picture above! Hadn’t heard he picked something up, that is truly amazing. I remember when coach hall extended his hand to shake Kaedon’s, and Kaedon extended the prosthetic to meet coach hall’s hand. That was pretty awesome to see.
