The Austin American Statesman is reporting that a finalist will soon be named for the Chancellor’s position in the University of Texas System.

Sources say Admiral William McRaven is expected to be named the sole finalist for the top position in the UT System.  The 58 year old McRaven, a Navy Seal, was the director of the special forces operation that took down Osama bin Laden in 2011.  Since then, McRaven has commanded the 66,000 special operations forces in the military from MacDill Air Force Base in Florida.  From San Antonio, McRaven earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from UT-Austin before starting his military career.

Admiral McRaven would be replacing current chancellor, Francisco Cigarroa, who plans to step down to lead the pediatric transplant team for the UT Health Science Center in San Antonio.  The UT Board of Regents must wait at least 21 days after naming a finalist before making the appointment official.
