WASHINGTON CO. JOBLESS RATE UP ONE PERCENT FROM MAY

  

The unemployment rate in Washington County rose in June, one month after falling to its lowest in almost 20 years.

Texas Workforce Commission data from June shows the county’s jobless rate was 3.7, a full percentage point above May’s rate of 2.7 percent, the county’s lowest since December 1999.

In June, the total labor force in the county was 15,069, with 553 unemployed.  May’s work force totaled 15,056, with 405 jobless.

After setting a historic low in May for unemployment, the state’s jobless rate fell again to 3.4 percent, the lowest the rate has been since series tracking started in 1976.  The state economy added 45,000 seasonally adjusted non-farm positions in June.

The June jobless rates for surrounding counties include:

  • Austin County – 3.5 percent, up seven-tenths from May.
  • Brazos County – 3 percent, also up seven-tenths.
  • Burleson County – 3.2 percent, also up seven-tenths.
  • Fayette County – 2.8 percent, up five-tenths from May.
  • Lee County – 2.9 percent, up six-tenths.
  • Waller County – 4 percent, up nine-tenths.
