WASHINGTON CO. SHERIFF’S OFFICE PRESENTS RACIAL PROFILING REPORT

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office presented its Racial Profiling Report detailing all traffic stops in 2018 at today’s (Tuesday) County Commissioners meeting.

Washington County Sheriff Otto Hanak said that the office’s written policy defines racial profiling and strictly prohibits peace officers from engaging in it.

In the report, Hanak noted that the Sheriff’s Office dealt with 4,822 traffic stops last year.  Of that total, 3,072 were for a moving traffic violation.

Out of all the traffic stops, 2,928 dealt with a male subject, and 1,894 with a female.  Pertaining to race, 2,576 stops involved a white subject, 1,225 included an African American subject, 891 had a Hispanic or Latino, 104 were Asian or Pacific Islanders, and 26 were Alaskan Natives or American Indian.

Out of all the stops, officers conducted 497 searches.  Contraband was found in 229 of those stops, with drugs or alcohol making up 197 of those.

As a result of all of the stops, officers gave 3,142 warnings, and issued 1,337 citations.  A written warning and arrest was made in 110 stops, while 187 stops constituted a citation and arrest.

In addition, out of all 4,822 stops in 2018, only one involved the use of physical force resulting in bodily injury.

Hanak, along with several commissioners, thanked the Information Technology Department for its continued work on the county’s new Zuercher software system, saying it makes tracking data like this much easier.
