WASHINGTON CO. SPELLING BEE CANCELLED

For the first time in 66 years, there will be no Spelling Bee Champion for Washington County.

In an effort to protect students from Covid-19 exposure, there will be no “in person” spelling bee in Washington County this year.  Sarah Cook, Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Accountability at Brenham ISD, says every school is hosting their own spelling bee.  The champions from each school will be selected by January 15th, and will go on to compete at the Regional Spelling Bee in Bryan in late January or early February.  Cook says the Regional Bee will be a virtual one, with each participant competing through a computer, in order to keep everyone safe.

2020 was the 65th straight year that KWHI has sponsored and broadcast the annual countywide spelling bee for Brenham, Burton and private schools in Washington County.  KWHI founder, the late Tom S. Whitehead Sr., was instrumental in establishing the spelling bee in 1955.  The radio station has provided cash prizes to the top three spellers each year at the event.  Current KWHI President Tom D. Whitehead says he hopes the annual “in person” spelling bee will be continued in 2022 once it can be held safely.  Whitehead says he believes the tradition of crowning a county champion is something that should be continued, even if each school’s “champion” is allowed to move on to the Regional Bee.

KWHI will announce the champions from each of the county schools once they are all determined.
