WASHINGTON ON THE BRAZOS CELEBRATES TEXAS INDEPENDENDENCE

  

When thousands gathered to celebrate the 1836 Texas Declaration of Independence Sunday at the Washington On the Brazos State Historic Site, the temperatures were about the same as they were 178 years ago.

This was the weekend for the park to remember the heroic and historic events that happened at the park,. the birthplace of Texas.

Throughout the weekend people came out to see handcraft demonstrations, a new exhibit at the Star of the Republic Museum, and interact with re-enactors portraying Texas historic figures.

The ceremony commemorating the events featured the reading of the Texas Declaration and keynote speaker State Rep.  Lois Kolkhorst, who pointed out that these events 178 years ago made Texas a nation, and with a ‘thirst for freedom, we became unique.

Kolkhorst said after Texas joined the Union, the state became a leader for progress.

After the ceremony, everyone was invited to have a slice of a big Texas size birthday cake.
