WCHLA IS IN SEARCH OF “CHAMPIONS FOR SENIORS”

The Washington County Healthy Living Center is looking to begin a new life in a permanent building.

After spending the last forty years in a variety of locations in a “rented space”, including the Washington County Fairgrounds, the old Brenham Elementary and the Knights of Columbus Hall, the WCHLA is about $300,000 short of the money needed finish off the building on Tom Green Street, and has established an ongoing campaign entitled “Champions for Seniors,” in which donations are being sought for the building and for operational expenses.

The goal for the Center is close to be recognized, but funds are still needed to finish a parking lot and furnish the facility.

A very enthusiastic Dottie Schaer, a Board member of the WCHLA, tells a little more about the ongoing campaign, and why volunteers and donations are so important:

Schaer noted that there are people who come in every week and donate small amounts to the Center to help get the Senior Center paid for. It is that important to those members of the community.

During the first nine months of 2015, 90 volunteers have delivered 13,000 meals and served more than 17,000 meals to seniors, and have provided a needed place for them to socialize.

The building donation funds will also be used for arts and crafts, sewing, computer room and for exercise and caregiver programs.

For those who wish to help fulfill the dream of a completed Senior Center and a place for , donations may be made in the following ways:

  1. To see some true smiles on people’s faces, donate to the Senior Center, folks your money will be used for the betterment of your friends (and maybe a parent) and neighbors, and nothing is more rewarding than to see the SMILING FACES of our senior citizens.

  2. How are you $30,000 short? If you didn’t have the funds, then don’t start building. Now it’s just an eyesore. Doesn’t sound very planned out. It’s very typical around here to not think it through.
