WILDFLOWERS BLOOMING EARLY IN CENTRAL TEXAS

The Texas wildflower season is expected to arrive sooner and stay longer than usual, according to experts at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.

“Hold onto your hat and fasten your seatbelt,” said Andrea DeLong-Amaya, director of horticulture at the Wildflower Center. “Wildflower season is taking off faster than you expect.”

In Washington County, the Chamber of Commerce is reporting early sightings of the beloved bluebonnets.

“The rolling hills of Washington County are greening up and the wildflowers are poking through – including bluebonnets” said the Chamber in a press release Friday.

“We’ve seen them in town at private residences, and we’ve seen them in the median of Hwy 290 East on the edge of town, but we’ve just received a report of blooms in Independence at Old Baylor Park along FM 390, just west of FM 50.”

Central Texas experienced ample of rainfall in the fall and winter and warmer temperatures than usual in January and February, leading to some wildflowers blooming earlier.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s three-month forecast predicts warmer than average weather for Central Texas, but cold fronts and freezes can still occur.
