SOMERVILLE SCHOOL BOND ISSUE A DISAPPOINTMENT TO SOME

Strong reactions are coming in from Somerville residents who are disappointed in the failure of the 12.5 million dollar school bond election, which was defeated in Tuesday’s elections.

Had it passed, it would have paid for a new elementary school and renovations to the high school.

Proponents knew the that it was going to be close, but Somerville’s elementary school principal Dr. Kenneth Groholski had hope that the outcome would have been different.

Groholski says the elementary school is overcrowded and they need more space; the classrooms are full, and staffing problems and teaching needs are an issue.

Opponents of the issues say they are not against schools, they are just against the amount proposed to be spent.

Superintendent Charles Camarillo says he will be talking to the school board next week, but does not anticipate a new game plan anytime soon, saying that they will do the best with what they have.

“To me the school district, the campus should be side by side with the community working together on what's right for the students and the community," says Groholski.

"I'm just hoping both sides can get together with an agreement on what we can afford and what we can get for the money that we are offering to use," says Van Sessen.
