On June 22, a report was filed with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office in reference to unauthorized credit card charges.  At the time of the report, the victim stated that someone had used her credit card to purchase a stove at Lowes in Brenham.  Sheriff’s Investigator Mark Whidden and D.P.S. Agent Cody Rogers were eventually able to identify the suspect through receipts, interviews, and in-store video obtained from Lowes.

On August 9th, charges of credit card abuse, a state jail felony, were filed and a warrant was issued for 71 year old Brenham resident Ruby Jewel Proctor-Jones.  Proctor-Jones was arrested at the Sheriff’s Office on Friday at which time she told investigators that she had received the victim’s credit card number from an Internet friend in Africa.  Sheriff Hanak stated Proctor-Jones was booked into the Washington County Jail and later released on a $1,500 bond.  The investigation continues with possible additional charges.

  1. People need to work for what they want. Nothing is given. This world is in trouble. How can a 71 year old woman not know that it is wrong to steal. Please help her Lord. This is so sad.

  2. She did not consider her choices. She should be willing to accept any consequences that are given to her. Poor self control.skill.

  3. Same thing happened to me. I totally agree this needs to stop. Some got my banking information and purchased several house hold items from different home depot stores in the Houston area. Banking account had to be closed and I never found out who did this to me. I pray that the DAY founds out something.

  4. “A friend in Africa” really!!!!

How did the friend in Africa get someone else’s credit card number and why did Ms. Proctor-Jones feel she had a right to use it. I hope the DA’s office takes a very hard stance on this one, assuming the evidence supports a guilty finding I further hope the court imposes a harsh penalty. Identity fraud has harmed so many people and many times the guilty party is never caught. Lets send a strong message the Washington County does not support this.
