BISD RELEASES SETTLEMENT INFO

In response to a KWHI formal request under the Freedom of Information Act the Brenham Independent School District has issued a press release regarding a settlement over a lawsuit against the district.

After a closed executive session of the board Monday afternoon, they voted to settle the suit, saying only that it was in the best interest of the district to do so.

Superintendent Sam Bell, at the time, refused to release any information about the suit, including the amount of public money that was paid by the district.

After KWHI’s request, the district has announced the settlement involved the family of a student who receives special education services, and was in the amount of $1800.

The district release went on to say that in the interest of student confidentiality they could not provide any further details.

  1. Based on the small amount of the settlement, one has to guess the district realized that fighting a lawsuit was more expensive than settling the case cheaply. Settlements in such a small amount often indicate that the plaintiff had a very weak case but the district wanted it to go away.
