CHAMBER OF COMMERCE BUY LOCAL CONTEST

When it comes to shopping the Washington County Chamber of Commerce wants you to stay right here at home and do it the old fashion way, by going in person to the stores and shops.

Shae Pauler of the Chamber says that for the rest of this year the Chamber will be holding a Buy Local Cash in Contest.

She says many people don’t realize the importance of keeping their hard earned dollars in their own  community.  That’s the reason behind the Buy Local Awareness contest.   She says the contests is to inspire businesses and community members to shop locally, share their stories and become eligible for cash prizes.  This, she says, benefits the entire community.

Pauler emphasizes that you need to come to the stores yourself, and not shop online.

Local business owners and managers can give a local vendor an opportunity and they may surprise you on how you find competitive pricing locally.  This will reduce travel and shipping expenses and it means better customer service. Keeping sales taxes in the community will benefit you, your family and neighbors.  Local businesses will become stronger and they are the ones who give most to our local civic organizations, non-profits, and youth sports.

The Chamber wants you to write up a story about a positive experience  with local buying.  Then they want you to email your story to events@brehamtexas,com by November tenth to be entered into a drawing for cash.  One business to business testimonial will win $1000

  1. Strive first to buy “Made in the USA” and buy from local vendors (the smaller stores). Also read the labels on everything especially you food you will be surprised. Maybe Washington County or the City or both could build a large venue were local craftsman, farmers and ranchers can take their products set up booths on weekends. Made, grown and raised in the USA and sold right here in Washington County.
Many of our large employers are owned by companies from out of town and/or out of state and they are mandated to buy from vendors most of which are not local. These companies could make a big difference by buying from local vendors and at least keeping it in Texas.

  2. I totally agree with the person above. There is no place to shop after 5PM when people get off work, no craft store and no sporting goods store that stocks what I want to purchase. I would love to shop locally but Brenham has very few shops that meet my spending needs so off to College Station or Houston I go. And the restaurant scene, well I won’t even go there. I eat at home all the time but I would love a decent restaurant to go to. All we have are fast food restaurants and everything tastes the same – like old grease!!! Please, don’t open another Mexican restaurant, we have more than enough. Get some stores that meet the consumers needs and we will shop them!!

    1. I travel about a 10 county area in my work, and comparatively speaking, Brenham has great restaurants for a small town. It sounds to me like some folks want everything that big city has, but also be able to live in a small town. Believe me, it doesn’t work that way. I’ve lived in one of the largest cities in the USA, and also in small town. No comparison for me, I’ll take the lifestyle and culture of a small town, and enjoy and support the shops and restaurants that we have. If you want a certain type of business/restaurant that we don’t have, why don’t you open it?

  3. This is a great Idea , However it is very hard to buy a lot of items locally . We really need more stores like Target, Academy, Hobby Lobby ETC… and some places for men to buy clothes. Also we could use a few chain restaurants, Only real choice for a night out to eat is Mexican food, People travel to College Station to go out to eat and while they are there they shop the stores for things not found in Brenham, If the chamber could work on bringing more stores here that would be great.
