Cubs’ starting pitcher Blake Wellmann (5-0) fired a gem, giving up just one earned run while scattering five hits, while striking out five and walking just one.

The Cubs (18-7/13-1) took the early lead when Zach Barnes laid down a perfect two-out squeeze bunt that scored Dakota Brewton.  Brewton had doubled with two outs, then advanced to third on an error.

Magnolia (14-10/9-5) tied the game in the third on a sacrifice fly by Noah McGowan.  But, that was all the Bulldogs would get after centerfielder Rayne Richard gunned-down the speedy Michael Smith who was trying to advance to second on the fly ball.

The Cubs took the lead for good in the top of the sixth.  Teddy Hoffman walked, then stole second.  That was followed by Caleb Hill’s rbi-single up the middle.

Wellmann mad the lead stand up as he retired seven of the last eight batters he faced.

The Cubs have two more regular season games before they begin the playoffs—the 31st consecutive year for the Cubs in the postseason.

Brenham’s last home game will be Tuesday night when they host long-time rival Huntsville at 7:00 at Firemen’s Park.

The game can be heard on KWHI and www.kwhi.com at 6:40.

Other 18/4A scores:  Huntsville 5   Waller 4;  Rudder 2   Willis 0:  Magnoila West 6   Caney Creek 1;  Montgomery had a bye.
