NEW STOP SIGNS TAKE EFFECT SATURDAY

The City of Brenham is reminding motorists that new stop signs at the intersection of South Day and Charles Lewis streets will take effect today (Saturday).

The new signs were approved at the November 20th City Council meeting.

The city has also approved a stop signs at South Day and College Avenue.  Those have not been put in place.

  1. I’m not exactly sure how many years ago this gentleman rode his bike around/across S Day Street, but I feel it might have been a while ago. Brenham is growing, populations change, traffic has increased. This is a good thing for Brenham but it also requires attention to problem areas of the city as they develop. If this person has not experienced seeing traffic, or pedestrian/biker use on S Day with hazards, it only shows me he is not familiar with the current S Day Street activity. Thank you.

  2. It is interesting that there is negativity to controlling speeding traffic in Brenham. Especially on a residential road that has individuals walking and riding their bikes on it because of lack of sidewalks. And even more interesting that these comments are most likely provided by individuals who do not live on this well-trafficked street. Residents along this street have requested in the past that the road be patrolled for speeders, traffic trailers with signs have been placed reminding drivers of speed limits, etc. No positive results from all attempts. So before you go negative and state that you are being regulated to death, please just take a few moments to stop at a stop sign placed there because others drivers did not choose to drive as safely as you down Day Street.

    1. There have been no positive results because there has been no enforcement of the speed limit. A stop sign does not equal law enforcement. I was raised and lived off an intersecting street with South Day for 18 years. South Day is a wide street and I had the sense to ride my bike on the right side of the road. If I knew traffic was heavy on Day, I used Key Street to travel north and south. I also walked across South Day to go to my friend’s home every week and never felt I was in danger of being struck. I rarely see anyone walking down South Day and I fail to see any problem that common sense and some parenting or grandparenting couldn’t have overcome in this situation.

      1. Brian,
2015 is an election year for the City of Brenham. Step up and run for a council seat or even mayor. Our city deserves a common sense and smaller government.

  3. This is a residential neighborhood with children riding bicycles and walking on the margins of the streets. We need to zone the commercial traffic that barrels down Day St. all times of the day and night. Citizens need to recognize the need for family centric areas, as we can’t have it both ways. The new stop signs on Day are to slow down all drivers and their loud grinding gears and music. This is the 21st century and Brenham is no longer a country hamlet!

    1. I see the new stop sign at Day and Charles Lewis streets as a definite positive. Traffic has increased, as has the Brenham population, and Day Street is a rather long expanse of free flowing traffic. It is a residential neighborhood, with homes on both sides of the street. Visitors to the residences must usually park on Day Street, thus increasing the possibility of a speeding auto hitting the parked car. I applaud this new stop sign.

  4. I agree with motherhood and the speed bump concept. It would really help me keep control of my car on the wet rainy days when I sip my coffee, tune my radio, write a text, and answer my other cell phone too. I really need to have others slow down on the road in case I drop my eyeliner brush too. More traffic control is so much better, I cannot figure out how we have lived without proper traffic control for so many years. Maybe we will get lucky and have a stop sign at every single corner and a speed bump at the middle of each block too. That is exactly what we need. Yes, who ever is presenting and making these decisions needs to be congratulated. We should all be proud of their high level of intelligence and all of the little things our government does for us, just to make our lives better. Donkashane, Donkashane,

  5. I was in an accident one morning while traveling down Key st. when a truck pulled out in front of me from Charles Lewis- it had just stopped raining, so all braking did was make.me slide. Since there was no stop sign, they weren’t prompted to check for cross traffic. Yeah, most people would look both ways without signage, but the stop signs that were put up two weeks later make people pay a little more attention. A similar situation to mine could have prompted this.

    1. As you stated there were no signs at Key St. and Charles Lewis at one time. These types of intersections exist across Brenham and need to be addressed. However, two signs have always existed at Charles Lewis and South Day. These new signs are only there to slow down drivers and hinder traffic flow. They will probably create accidents because drivers who frequented the area for years will likely forget the signs are there. If residents truly care about traffic managment in this city, please contact the city council as well and not just post on KWHI.

      1. I agree that more people need to speak up to government. The working citizens and voters cannot trust government common sense; not even local government anymore, something that once was and is no longer. Our government has been disintegrating at an exponential rate for the past 10-15 years. Unfortunately, the working people cannot attend government meetings during the work day. Local government has obviously attained the rank of anonymity that once only occurred at higher levels of government.

Real traffic engineering common sense would have recommended a signal at College St. and Austin St. that would blink after hours. Real traffic engineering would have said no to both stop signs. The traffic signal at College St. and Austin St. could have even provided a protected crosswalk.

The only hope of the working citizens is that of the return of common sense in government.

  6. Stop sign at Charles Lewis Street?? What kind of shoddy traffic engineering practice would support a stop sign within a block of another stop sign just south of the new one; this is not even located on a busy street. This is so ignorant; and I believe the first of such ridiculous stop sign placements in Brenham. Stupid continues to be an epidemic in government. Who recommended this?? Who is responsible for approving this??

    1. I agree. I drive Day Street that far occasionally at different times of the day, and I have yet to meet a car at the Charles Lewis intersection. I know they put it in to slow traffic down, but I haven’t come across that many speeding vehicles coming down that road either. I was in College Station yesterday and was in a neighborhood that had speed bumps to slow the fast drivers down-what a concept….and it worked-the flow of traffic kept going but more slowly.
The next stupid stop sign is going to be put up at Day and College-bad bad decision!
And don’t even get me started with the traffic problems still out by WalMart!!
