David Johnson named Region XIV Coach of the Year, three Buccaneers named all-region

Three Buccaneers earned all-region honors and head coach David Johnson was named Region XIV Men’s Golf Coach of the Year after leading the 16th-ranked Buccaneers to the Region XIV championship and receiving an at-large bid to the NJCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship.

Coach David Johnson

“What a great accomplishment,” Johnson said. “We had three golfers make the all-region team and this will help our program grow stronger in the future. All of them worked hard and deserved to win the championship.”

This is the third time that Johnson, who has more than 30 years of collegiate coaching experience, has been named Region XIV Coach of the Year. This year’s team marks the third that has won a Region XIV Championship and sixth that has earned a spot at the NJCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship under Johnson’s direction.

“I wouldn’t have gotten this award if it wasn’t for our players and my assistant coach, Katie Johnston,” Johnson said. “They are the one who made it all happen.”

The Region XIV Championship was determined by totaling the scores of the Pinecrest Tournament and Centenary/Hal Sutton Invite. The Buccaneers won the tournament with a five-round total of 1,469.

Riley Simmons (Cypress), Cameron Gray (Kirkcudbright, Scotland), and John Baker (Liberty Hill) were named to the five-player all-region team.

Simmons was named the Region XIV Tournament champion with a five-round total of 360, while Gray placed third in the regional tournament with a 366 and Baker placed fourth with a 368.

“I was just doing what I could to help our team win our first regional championship,” Simmons said. “I couldn’t have done it without my coaches and teammates driving me to work hard. It means a lot to receive this because it validates all of my hard work, and I hope it starts a streak of Blinn Region XIV championships.”

Next, the Buccaneers will compete in the NJCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship at The Rawls Course in Lubbock, Texas, May 10-13.
